Document Summary
Contrast 4 main theories of int: spearman"s g, thurstone"s primary mental abilities, cattell"s 2 types of int, sternberg"s triarchic theory, gardner"s multiple inte. Alfred binet wanted to identify children who might need educational assistance (late 19th century france) Created a series of task to measure children"s performance. Just measured aptitude for learning, no theory yet. Scientific theory better questions and research ideas. Observation: noticed that performance on various test (math, language, music etc) is correlated. Hypothesis: one ability must underline all difference in intellect. Not everyone will score highly on all measure (not perfect positive relation) Two-factor theory: a person"s performance on test is due to a combo of: general ability, skills specific to test. Observation: notice that performance on similar test (geo and arithm, lang and writing) are more correlated with another. Hypothesis: one ability does not account for this, must be multiple abilities.
