Main cause of death: from organ failures by: 1) heart disease; 2) cancer; 3) stroke. Main causes of death: infecion caused by: 1) pneumonia; 2) tuberculosis; 3) inluenza. The plague was caused by bacteria living on leas on rats which spread to human. Early plague doctors stated the miasma theory. Miasma theory: disease is caused by bad smells. Plague doctors (fake) wore long nose masks illed w/ good smells to prevent & treat plague. Reassured people because some form of treatment was being done. Cures & treatments failed cuz cause of disease was unknown. Caused possibly by cursful god or spontaneously or miasma theory. Postnatal infecions caused 30% death rate ==> sudden drop caused by penicillin. Surgery survival rate less than 30% & most childbirth led to death from infecion. Only survived for a week if survived surgery. More deaths during wwi & ww2 due to infecion vs combat (fatal cut on inger)
