PSY 2301 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Central Nervous System, Enteric Nervous System, Autonomic Nervous System
Document Summary
Key points from last lecture: behaviour is publicly observable actions made by an organism. The term (cid:498)brain(cid:499) refers to the entire nervous system. How do brain and behaviour relate to one another: behaviour is an observable action in a living organism, brain is the nervous system. If behaviour is action, then it must come from brain activity. No: behaviour has one (and only one) cause brain activity. The trouble with other relation words is that there is or can be another cause: ex. Affects/modulates what something else is making happen: ex. Controls/determines could also be acting on something with another cause or driving force. Book sometimes says (cid:498)control(cid:499) but this can mislead. Yes, brain controls muscles and muscles cause behaviour. Behaviour is not something that is on-going that the brain merely controls. The brain causes it to happen (via muscles) Maybe you could say it determines it (sole cause, determinant) or is responsible for it.
