Ms is a chronic disease; affects the cns the brain and spinal cord. Attacks the myelin sheath; reduces it and leads to ms plaques, disrupts communication between one cell to another. (least to most disability) Benign ms: minimal disability, few flare-ups but goes back to base line. Relapsing-remitting ms: flare-ups, but once recovered, the patient gets worse than prior to flare-up. Primary-progressive ms: linear relationship; more disability as time goes on. To do so, individuals are prescribed with steroids to help manage symptoms associated with acute attacks. No long-term affects with the course of the disease. Goal to prevent new attacks, to reduce inflammation and reduce the immune response. -implications related to psychology and anxiety that can be associated with administering these drugs.
