Lucid dreaming
Dreams:
• Dreams are phenomenological (everyone's are unique) and a reflection of your
hopes, imagery, metaphors, dreams and anxieties keyed into who you are as an
individual, they interact with stress, intelligence, emotions, neuronal networks,
chemistry, relationships, nature of relationships and work experiences
• Dreams can go from concrete and realistic to tangible and psychotic (align with
persons mental waking state, reflective of person)
• You can evoke a dream
• You can move back and forth in time in a dream
Dr. Stephen Laberge: founder of lucid dreaming, teaches people how to do it, founded the
lucidity institute
• Believes that It can solve a lot of human problems
o Key point is that the key difference between being awake and dreaming is that
when you are awake your experience is in reaction to external stimuli, but when
you are dreaming you are reacting to your own internal stimuli (mirror effect
because internal stimuli are developed through emotional encoding the external
ones)
o Another key difference is that when your asleep there is no external stable
source of stimulation, the world is less real, and that is when you realize that you
must be dreaming because the laws of physics don’t apply
o Passage of time and the reality of death do no exist in the dream world
o Dreaming is just one state of many states of consciousness (in love, dreaming,
lucid dreaming, drunk)
o Dreaming can be viewed as a special case of perception without the use of
external input
Uses of Lucid Dreaming:
