Document Summary

In some cases metabolic inefficiency may sometimes be beneficial. Because if we have mice adapted to cold temperatures they want to keep their bodies warm. So they can take advantage of the uncoupling protein which provides heat. Heat cant do work, but its useful for warmth. Another scenario where metabolic inefficiency is useful is when animals are over fed or obese, not a good thing for wild animals. Because they will have a hard time running away from animals. So in that situation they will want to use uncoupling protein so that they can produce heat and get rid of it in the environment. There are different ways that the uncoupling protein facilitates the movement of protons, we do not know which one of them is correct. Only thing we know about the uncoupling protein is that it is dependant on fatty acids.
