PSYA01H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Ingroups And Outgroups, Control Variable, Observational Error
Document Summary
Psya01 - lecture 6- experimentation: finding the cause. Low self esteem (poor economy) - leads to prejudicial attitude. Experiment: manipulate self esteem to compare with normal self esteem effects of that on prejudicial behaviour. One group of subjects had conversation and let them move on to next step (normal self esteem) He sets up a set of slides and makes the other subjects wait, then when they have a conversation with the other group he nudges it making it fall. He blames the subject for the incident lowering their self esteem. They let them move on to the step after incident. Second group was found to show more prejudicial behaviour then the first group. Ingroup- like you, follow same beliefs, behaviour, culture and etc. Out group - unlike you, doesn"t follow same beliefs, behaviour, culture and etc. Validity - whether one believes that a given operational definition really reflects the theoretical entity is meant to represent.
