Types of clinicians: psychiatrist, psychologist, clinical counsellor, social worker. Treatment: diagnosis psychological treatment or biological treatment. Why get treatment: personal & social costs, financial cost, these impairments are just as severe as those associated w/ physical. Access to treatment: 1 of biggest challenges in mental health. 20% of canadians suffer from moderate to serious mental health disorder @ some point in their lives: only ~40% of these individuals seek treatment. 1/3 of those that seek treatment are unsatisfied w/ level of treatment they receive. Private insurance often has low limits on these types of professionals. Approaches to treatment: 2 types: psychological & biological. Psychological treatment: many types of psychological treatment, or psychotherapy, techniques in psychotherapy are referred to as orientations. Psychodynamic theory: has roots in freud"s methods of psychoanalysis, therapy centred on belief that psychological problems come from ineffectively repressing aggressive & sexual urges in childhood.
