Document Summary

Psyb10: lecture 8 experimental methods: establishing causality march 2nd, 2017. An experiment is the only way to establish causality: temporal order must be correct cause must come before outcome, variables must covary, no other variable is causing the outcome. What is an experiment: research design in which a variable is manipulated the effect on another variable is measured. Independent is presented first, and dependent is measured after. Independent is the only variable that varies, and all other variables are constant this way they may still have influence, but the influence will be the same on all participants: for anything you can"t hold constant. Use random assignment or matching addresses problem of self- Control group represents what the experimental group would have been like had it not been exposed to the stimulus. You do not have to have a strict control group just a comparison that differs only in terms of the independent variable.
