In the middle of the 14th century there was a plague that wiped out a large part of the population (from 90,000-55,000). Palazzo vecchio is the centre of government. History: it started as a colony for retired soldiers. Centre of government is started by being built on top of a theatre. Romans started cities by making a cross. Private palaces, churches and theatres compose the city. 1400 was the beginning of the renaissance. 1415 linear perspective was invented (filippo brunelleschi) This led to an acceleration of exchange of information. Built the dome with a dirt mound. Outer core with a system of ribs. 16 years and 2 weeks to build the dome. Arnolfo di cambio, nave of the cathedral (1296-1367) Orphanage of sort (hospital for the innocent) Deliberate use of proportions - very balanced elevation.
