The dif culties regarding the us and japan are some of the most troubling (not to mention that the japanese attack on pearl harbor brought the us into war). When fdr requests a declaration of war against japan he nds himself immediately confronting a german declaration. There is thus an european and asian story that brought the us to war. In europe, at the least the story unfolds form 1941 onwards. The europeans are at war from 1939 onwards, but it is a longer story in asia. The real world to what becomes wwii for the us begins in 1937 with the japanese moves into china and a continuing period of japanese military activity elsewhere in asia. This is a period that the us is debating with choosing war. immediately preceding this was wwi. In the 1890s, there is again a hemming and hawing about whether to go to war with the spanish; again in 1846 about texas and mexico.
