Ourselves, and also the societies and communities in which we live. Today, we see how these ideas crossed the alps and became the precondition for the reformation. Italian humanism was beginning to change in the latter part of the 14th and 15th century. The florentine republic no longer reflected what was happening in europe. In order to have enough protection and the ability to deal quickly with crises, most monarchs succumbed to monarchical rule. The emphasis on the idea of a republic essentially ended. By 1530, it was a monarchy, and by 1837, it was a hereditary monarchy. They could not play the kind of role they otherwise might have been able to exercise in keeping some of these principles alive.
