HPS100H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Aristotelian Physics
Document Summary
Intro: so far, we have been concerned with the process of scientific change; transitions and the logic in transitions. Now we are going to focus on the topics on the scientific method. As a philosopher, we"d have a much simpler view of the past. Without the past mosaic, there was only static method, which is the hypothetico-deductive method. We have to study the science of the past and not try and dismiss it, even if they aren"t the best. It teaches us that not only scientific theories change, but also scientific methods change. They can teach us that there can be genuine science with a different scientific method. Aristotelian-medieval mosaic: the key elements of this mosaic were accepted until the end of the 17th century. The elements are natural physiology of physics, humourist physiology, astrology, cosmology, theology, metaphysics, mathematics, optics, natural history, and aristotelian-medieval method. Aristotelian physics: four elements are earth, fire, water, and air.
