Document Summary

Hst209 lecture 3, determinants of health and healthcare. Healthcare should not be seen as the primary determinant of health. There are other determinants that we should focus on. Emphasis on epidemiology and economics (big scale data) To improve health we need to improve wealth. We should invest and support the wealth producing sectors in canada i. e. , technology, oil, resource development business, money, industry, corporate interests. Critiques of population health positivist focus on science epidemiology too much focus on big picture and losing sights of little picture helping individuals and empowering communities lets just look at large data. There are inequalities in health and resource distribution, income, etc. If you give more money in the rich sectors then the gap is wider and the poor will suffer more. Doesn"t tell us anything of why these situations are happening. Too much focus on population results in no context for individual situations. Skews the data, ignores what"s happening in smaller populations.
