PSL201Y1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Sympathetic Nervous System, Renal Function, Renal Pelvis
Document Summary
Ensure the maintenance of normal volume and composition of body fluids. Maintain blood pressure, hemoglobin levels and calcium levels. Regulate ion composition: by increasing/decreasing the excretion of specific ions (na. 2+, in the urine the kidneys regulate the concentration of ions in the plasma. Regulate blood plasma volume and pressure: by controlling the rate at which water is excreted in the urine. Filter blood plasma and add/remove solutes and water: since kidneys excrete waste in the urine they clear the plasma of wastes products and eliminate them from the body. Urinary system: two kidneys, two ureters, urinary bladder, and urethra. Kidneys form urine which is moved to the bladder by the ureters, urine gets excreted by moving through the urethra out of the body. Kidney receive blood supply by the renal arteries which branch of the aorta and enter each kidney by the renal hilus.
