Townshend act 1767 a series of taxes levelled in the colonies to raise revenue to pay governors and judges so that they would be independent to colonial in uence and strictly enforce british political legal interests. A riot occurred and the british soldiers shot randomly into the crowd killing 5 people; they were then defended by john adams.
