Aziz"s friend is a closet gay, cant come out with it. Subtle critique of moroccan culture, gay men cant come out, women are beaten. Conclusions arent offered, we have to judge for ourselves. Pathos lies in the fact that he cant talk to anyone about his desire. He has to live his life not being open. He lives in a society where men are expected to do masculine things (male sex jokes, harass women, play intense sports) A draw to move to america is that the protection of people is larger. Gay men can be accepted, women have protection. Without saying it directly, the author shows us that the west is the better option. Gender is performed, opposite genders learn to be who they are by acting the way they are. Lalami presents this society as negative, gender is a straight jacket that is a prison. Women can only be sex objects, people who arent this don t fit in.
