None of the stories in lalamis book have a particularly upbeat ending. The endings don"t seem to signify much, but can be read in symbolic terms. Some people on the outskirts pull back into orthodox. Why the gender shift, the storyteller is a man in her story. Lalami wants us to see tourism from the other side. It is almost offensive, americans ignore everything and focus on sights. We don"t actually want to look at the slums, we just want to have a good time on vacation. Narrative is important, everything in us is shaped by it. The assumption of the orientalist is that "we know the east better than the east knows themselves" The story about the man with the tapestry. Why does he include this story about the tapestry. The depictions come across as realistic to the patriarchal society. The men could also be seen as more interesting because of their relentlessness.
