Merkel cells (sensory) sensory cells protrude up to the epidermis but the neutron of the cell is in the dermis the sense of touch gets picked up by merkel cells. 2 layers: papillary 20% has collagen bres super cial in the dermis, reticular 80% is lower in the dermis collagen bres are dense. Sometime called subcutaneous layer isn"t a part of the skin and is made up of fat. Formed by areolar tissue and adipose tissue areolar tissue connects muscles to the subcutaneous fat. The site of subcutaneous fat (which is different between sexes: males store more fat in the subcutaneous area around the abdominal region, women store more fat int he subcutaneous area around the hips. Skin colour: pigments from melanin, carotene (pigments in carrots and yolks of eggs) and hemoglobin (red colour in blood, melanin two types of melanin.
