Document Summary

Describe the structural organization of the skeleton and list the bones of the appendicular skeleton. Name and describe the bones of the pectoral girdle and pelvic girdle. Identify the major features of the bones of the upper and lower limb. Compare and contrast the upper and lower limb. Both have similar overall arrangement, but adapted to serve unique functions. Quadrupeds: all 4 limbs served purpose of stabilization and locomotion: upper limb: strength for fine motor control. Bipeds: evolved so that lighter upper limb does complex fine movement (grasping, reaching) while heavier lower limb does powerful movements and supports weight during walking and running, etc. Attaches upper limbs to axial skeleton via sternoclavicular joint. Highly mobile, therefore weak and injury prone. S shaped bone starts anteriorly at medial end and moves posteriorly at lateral end sternal end is medial (articulates with sternum) acromial end is lateral (acromia articulates with lateral end) Conoid tubercle and trapezoid line; important for ligament attachment.
