Mycobacteria - tuberculosis and leprosy: mycobacteria, m. tuberculosis. Often called tb for tubercle bacilli: m. bovis. Causes tuberculosis in cows, rarely in humans. Humans can be infected by the consumption of unpasteurized milk leading to extrapulmonary tuberculosis: m. avium. Can cause a tuberculosis-like illness in humans, particularly in aids patients: m. leprae. 1/3 of the population in the world are affected with tb. Active tb coughing and able to transmit it. Can infect 10 to 15 people a year. Hiv targets adaptive immune system, tb is a complication that kills these patients. Multi drug resistant tb mdr-tb does not respond to first line drugs, present in all countries surveyed. Burden of the disease in poverty stricken countries (africa, asia) In canada, pockets of individual communities where incidence is quite high. Slow generation: difficult to study, experiments can take a long time to execute and complete.
