Political Science 3337F/G Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Thick Description, Internal Validity, Ethnography
Document Summary
Usually inductive (process starts with eld research, then concepts and theories are developed) Interpretivist - (concerned with nding out what an action or event means to the people involved) Often constructionist- social life is not seen as xed, but as an outcome of interactions and negotiations. Takes a naturalist perspective - when doing research, the social world should be left as undisturbed as possible. Ethnography- participation observation (immersed in the social setting) Qualitative interviewing (in-depth, semi structured or unstructured) Discourse and conversation analysis (analyze the language) Final steps: writing up and ndings/conclusions- research must prove the credibility of the research and why the research matters. Quantitative research often involved grounded theory: the use of data to develop theories. This may involve an iterative process- going back and forth from data to theory. This can be though an iterative process, or occasionally through theory testing i the conventional sense.
