Document Summary
Psychodynamic perspective: look for causes of behavior in a dynamic interplay of inner forces that often conflict with one another, focus on unconscious determinants of behavior. The structure of personality: freud divided personality into 3 separate interacting units: (1) id (2) ego (3) superego, id, exists completely in the conscious mind. Internalized by id with parents and by what is right/wrong superego tries to block gratification permanently: moralistic goals take precedence over realistic ones. Psych 1000: ego must achieve compromise between demands of the id, constraints of the superego and the demands of reality; balancing act gives it the title executive of personality . Psych 1000: e. g. , a man with strong hostile impulses becomes an investigative, defense mechanisms operate unconsciously reporter who ruins political careers with his stories. Evaluating psychoanalytic theory: some psychoanalytic hypotheses are untestable, accepted non-conscious mental processes, such as automatic processing, are very different from the types of phenomena that freud placed in the unconscious mind.
