Something about the way someone is feeling is messing them up . Patient experiences only the despair of depression (6+ months) May be hallucination or delusions in severe case. Risk for suicide is low while patient is in worst depression. Don"t even have the drive to kill themselves. Risk increases as patient comes out of depression. Rates highest on weekends leaves and shortly after discharges. Patient swings from one extreme to the other. Relative low incidence (1% of the population) Patient experiences about 10 episodes of each state during life. Does not swing rapidly back and forth. Untreated, each phase can last for months. Some people are rapid cyclers (about 20%) Almost always in a state of mania or depression all throughout their lifetime. Even reports of some people shifting daily (very, rare)
