Major depression: polar opposite to mania, patient appears utterly dejected, hopeless, worthless, may be hallucinations or delusions in severe case, loss of appetite, sleep disturbance/fatigue, little, if any, interest in sex, contemplating suicide. Men have substantially higher suicide rates compared to women"s. Men tend to use violence to commit suicide, women tend to use medication. Risk of suicide low while patient is in the worst depression. The risk increases as the patient comes out of the depression.
