Focused fear of an object or situation that is out of proportion to the real threat. Likely often based on pavlovian conditioning, but not necessarily. Very common, with lifetime incidence of around 15% Excessive anxiety or worry, nearly every day for at least six months. Unlike phobias, it"s not tied to specific situations. Restlessness, feeling on edge and difficulty in concentrating. Associated with significant distress and/or social/occupational dysfunction. Panic attack sudden and unexpected onset of symptoms . There must be concern about future attacks to diagnose. Obsessions are thoughts or images that intrude uncontrollably into consciousness. Compulsions are behaviours that are carried out to reduce anxiety created by the obsession. Lifetime prevalence is 4-6% in the general population. Median age of onset is 30 (lots of variability) Gad 5% of people aged 15-45. Pd 6% of population over a lifetime, panic attacks are much more common. Scores on anxiety test correlate much more in monozygotics than in dizygotic twins.
