Individuals with pd are at higher risk of developing alzheimer"s. Can be described as a neurochemical or neurodegenerative disorder. 78% of patients have idiopathic pd (no known cause) Other causes (about 12%) include post influenza, environmental toxins, and industrial chemicals. Slow, shuffling gait most patients do not realize they are travelling slower. Movement initially elicited is a movement between the index finger and thumb (pill rolling) Pd affects parts of the brain that direct voluntary movement. Affects 2% of the population > 65 years of age. Only 5-10% under 50 years of age. The basal ganglia is made up of large subcortical structures that are interconnected and interposed between the cortex and the thalamus. There are also connections to the frontal cortex, limbic lobe, and brainstem.
