Document Summary

The structure of hiv: hiv can give us information about other diseases: epidemiology, drugs, affects society at many levels: stigmatism o. Also, after integration into host dna, mutations can occur during the transcription by the polymerase of host cell. The mutation rate: 1 in 1000 nucleotides are different that their parental virus = average of 2 mutation/ virus particle. Most mutations appear on gp120--> this allows virus to escape antibodies. We have antibodies for hiv but the virus mutates too frequently for them to be effective. Retroviruses bend the rules ie. hiv, have a genome (rna) but not like the other rna viruses (+ and -) this virus has diff. type of mechanism of replicating. Replication of hiv: step 1- infection of host (eg. cd4 + t cell) Virus must bind to a cell (eg. t cell) that has both cd4 & co receptor (ccr5) on its cell surface.
