Importance of vaccines - our skin is covered in microbes which protect us. Immunology is the study of our protection from and response to foreign invading organisms and altered host cells. In many cases, activating the immune system is the only way to fight the diseases. Bacteria: synergism between antibiotics and the immune system. Lymphoid cells tcells (helper cytotoxic suppressors) bcells (plasma and memory cells) and nk cells (natural killer cells) Myeloid cells granululotic ( neutrophils, eosiniphils and basophils) and monocytes (macrophages and dendritic cells) With no diseases you have a balance between infection and immunity. With disease the infection (amount of pathogens virulence) is greater than the immunity(host defense mechanisms) Immunity can also become smaller than the infection. Immunity can also over power the infection and can be activated greater: allergy --allergic reaction, autoimmune disease-the body can lose the ability to recognize itself from the cells, acute inflammation-sepsis, cytokine storm, chronic inflammation-cancer.
