SOCI 1010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: George Herbert Mead, Hidden Curriculum, Social Environment
Document Summary
Socialization is a lifelong process through which we develop the skills to survive in society and acquire our self identity. The process of socialization occurs through interactions with the agents of socialization, which includes families, peer groups, school and mass media. We are often unaware of the ways in which we are shaped by the agents of socialization. Socialization gives us the ability to consciously examine these effects of the agents of socialization and enhances our sociological imagination (refer to summary note of chapter one-three with the definition and the sociologist who coined the term) As we develop an increased awareness of our own socialization process, we develop a greater capacity for using our sociological imagination. The process of socialization increases the potential for us to be more aware of our role in the socialization process of others. Ie: being a parent and teaching your child morals and values that have shaped you.
