PSY-1200 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Roygbiv, Sketchpad, Sensory Memory
Document Summary
Memory is any indication that learning has persisted over time. It is our ability to store and retrieve information. Event happens : sensory memory (encoding, working memory (consciousness) encoding, long-term memory (stores information) retrieval. Sensory memory: major function is to hold information log enough to be processed further. Sensory registers: helps us to experience a constant flow of information, even if that flow is interrupted, selective attention: mental resources are focused on only part of the stimuli around us. Whole report: the exposure time for the stimulus is so small, that items cannot be rehearsed. Partial report: sensory memory capacity was larger than what was originally thought: the longer the delay the greater the memory loss. Duration of sensory memory differs for different senses: iconic: 0. 5 sec. long (eyes, echoic: 3-4 sec. long (ears, hepatic <1 sec. long (touch) Stimulus sensory detection (early selection models place the filter here) Recognition of meaning (late selection models place the filter here) .
