BIOL 300 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Chemotroph, Volvox, Prokaryote
Document Summary
Life may have been the inevitable consequence of the physical conditions of primitive earth: It took a long time to go from prokaryote to eukaryotes. Viruses can spread quickly and can become worldwide like the h3n2 influenza a virus (the flu) Huge diversity of life in the biosphere. Biology studies the level of life from molecules to organelles, cells, organisms. We can see the different types of organisms by using the taxonomic definition of type in which we consider the number of organisms in each kingdom. Accurate information is obtained by scientists on large animals but small organisms such as fungi or prokaryotes, the number is hard to be accurate with. We can organize organisms into group based on how they obtain carbon since carbon is the backbone of all inorganic molecules. Plants are generally autotrophs and they obtain their carbon through inorganic molecules (co2-any oxide with a carbon is considered an inorganic molecule)
