PR 605 Lecture Notes - Lecture 47: Job Performance, Impression Management, Ingratiation
Document Summary
For most people who have modest political skills or aren"t willing to play the game of politics, there are normally negative outcomes involved. However, perception of politics in organizations are negatively related to one"s satisfaction of their job. Politics can lead to self-reported employee performance declines because those employees might think they have unfair political environments, which doesn"t motivate these kind of people. When politicking is too much to handle for an employee, they quit. First, the politics performance relationship is dwindled by a person"s understanding of the organizational politics hows and whys. When there are high levels of politics and understanding, there is an increase of performance because these people see political activity as a kind of opportunity. This is the same for people with well-honed political skills. When you have a low understanding, you"re more likely to see politics as a threat, which can negatively affect your job performance.
