When is design most used and least evident to audiences: representational theatre, we tend to notice it less, presentational theatre, tend to notice it more, period design - representational, non-realistic design - presentational. Elements of design (5: the designer"s tools, line, all lines have direction : horizontal, vertical, or oblique. In theatrical design, a line can be created in several ways: shape, any self-contained area with defined form or outline. Shape has a positive and a negative: color, color can suggest emotion, helps establish with locale, time, mood, and focus, texture, texture refers to the surface quality of a shape. Designers: create the sensory space of the play, scenic, defines time and place, helps clarify mood, takes advantage of the five elements of design, lighting, helps clarify mood / focus, helps indicate how the audience should feel.
