Document Summary

It is the area on the human body directly under the joint where the arm connects to the shoulder. Medial: ribs 1-4 and associated intercostal spaces. Apex: convergence of clavicle, scapula and rib 1. Brachial plexus: nerve network that supplies the entire upper extremity. As newly oxygenated blood is coming from the left side of the heart to be distributed to the body, the newly oxygenated blood travels up through the arch of the aorta. From the arch of the aorta, we have three major vessels: brachiocephalic artery/trunk bt, left common carotid artery, left subclavian artery. The brachiocephalic artery/trunk (on the right side of the aorta) then subdivides into the subclavian artery and the right common carotid artery. The other two left common carotid and left subclavian come off independently. The subclavian artery, which is below the clavicle, continues out towards the upper extremity.
