Your success depends on how the team functions. A team has to stick together and cohere. A group of people may have the same goal, but they work independently. Groups: two or more people who interact with, and exert mutual influence on, each other. A sense of mutual interaction or interdependence for a common purpose distinguishes a group from a team. Norms: commonly accepted or established level of performance, pattern of behavior or belief. Informal: not written down, but everyone understands and knows it. Can be difficult to change: consider both who communicates change and how they communicate it. Understanding group roles: a role consists of the set of behaviors required or expected of the person occupying a certain position in a group. Role acceptance: influenced by four components: a. opportunity to use specialized skills/knowledge, b. feedback and role recognition, c. role significance, d. autonomy/chance to work independently.
