PSY 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Hindsight Bias, Confirmation Bias, Psychological Science
Document Summary
We cannot rely solely on intuition and common sense. Hindsight bias - i knew it all along . Good ideas are like good inventions; once created, they seem obvious. Knowing the answer tends to make us overconfident. As humans, we want to make sense of the world we live in. Therefore, we often perceive order in random events. Given enough random events, some unusual outcomes will occur. Curiosity underlies all science, but the important thing is to let facts speak for themselves. In order to see if an idea holds true, we need to test it. An explanation using an integrated set of principles that organizes observations and predicts behaviours or events. An idea that emerges after linking facts with deeper principles. First, we observe a series of behaviours. Hypothesis - a testable prediction, often implied by a theory. If our hypothesis holds true after being tested, we have support for our theory.
