SOC 001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 23: Arlie Russell Hochschild, Emotional Labor, Pediatrics
Document Summary
Primary socialization occurs in childhood through families/peer groups/friends and, to a lesser extent, peer groups. E. g. , hygiene, manners, gender roles, expectations about success, variable value of competitiveness, etc. Gender roles especially are learned through parental performances, interactional cues given by adults, toy choice, game play, and the symbolism attached to, e. g. , puberty. Secondary socialization occurs later, through the media and in high school, college, and work environments. At this age you listen and watch things that you want to watch and that you identify with. Recall the notion of idioculture: different work sites/companies can socialize employees differently. Micro cultures that are unique to specific workplaces. E. g. , arlie hochschild on emotional labor; emts on treating injuries. Flight attendants must be positive all the time that doesn"t come naturally but they must be socialized to do that so that it comes natural.
