Document Summary

A lifelong process through which people acquire norms and values, and develop a sense of self. Passage of norms, values, and social practices from one generation to another through socialization. Society is durable - it isn"t as volatile as we think. People are socialized into specific norms at different stages of the life force, and often in response to social currents . A lot of structural positions have role prescriptions which individuals must adopt. However, roles are not just adopted, but enacted agentically. Role conflict: we may experience tensions when working in 2 different roles. Mom who also coaches their kid"s soccer team. Principal who both responds to parents, and defends her teaching staff. Social identities - characteristic attributes we possess, that we develop through interaction in society (gender, sexual orientation, race, class) Self-identity - sense of self that we all have. Fascinating in that it cannot really be understood by anyone else.
