Qualitative research: non-statistical research based on observations in the field. Interview or focus groups: meeting between researcher and subject. Benefits of interviews: ask for clarification, explore unanticipated areas, pick up on non-verbal communication. Problems with interviews: sensitive topics and subjects lie, small convenience samples, no generalizability, subjectivity, open to interpretation/opinion, researchers interpretation. Participant observation (po: field research with researcher in direct contact with subject in their natural setting. Benefits of po: witness and experience what is happening, not just hear about it. Triangulation: combination of methods, survey groups of people, fill in the holes by taking random groups and doing extensive surveys, mixing methods to overcome limitations of each and increase credibility. Cross-sectional: collected at one point in time, surveys, interviews. Longitudinal: trace data over time, every 10 years, 10, 20, 30, etc. Ethics in research: standard of conduct/codes, can"t harm a subject during or after project. Measures to protect participants and future research: voluntary, full disclosure.
