When he exhibited the work in paris, his brothers asked him to remove it from the exhibition in the salon. His brothers were artists so they knew what they were talking about. The piece did come to new york in 1913 in the armory show where his piece was featured. Americans were dumbfounded that they began to make cartoons to make sense of the work. He is looking at the possibility of multiple figures in one plane like marey. He is interested in the complexities of the nude in that he believes that the nude doesn"t exist and rather the machine is what thrives. Because it is composed of sheets of metal, it is not erotic like a normal nude. Someone tried to buy it but it was already taken so he took a photo of it and painted on it and then that was just as good as an original. Successive positions of a figure on one plate.
