NURS 420 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Ileus, Lactic Acidosis, Metabolic Acidosis
Document Summary
Shock complex syndrome characterized by decreased tissue perfusion and impaired cellular metabolism. 2 main issue not enough oxygen to the cells in the issues; which impairs cellular metabolism &causes organ dysfunction > organ dmg. Shock affects all type decrease delivery of o2 and nutrients. Anaerobic metabolism: produces small amounts of energy but large amts of lactic acid. Lactic acid production -> tissue acidosis > inflammatory process > organ dysfunction. Metabolism changes at cellular level from aerobic to anaerobic. Lactic acid builds up and must be removed by liver. Attempt to overcome consequences of anaerobic metabolism and maintain homeostasis. Baroreceptors in carotid and aortic bodies activate sns in response to bp. 2 demands; problematic bc it increases demand on the heart vasoconstriction reattributes blood to the vital organs; but other major organs such as lungs, kidneys, gi, skin do not receive oxygen. Risk for paralytic ileus vasoconstriction to the skin > cool, clammy skin d/t oxygen not getting to the skin.
