HLTH 210 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Oseltamivir, Inactivated Vaccine, Nasal Spray
Document Summary
Acute respiratory infection caused by highly contagious rna virus belonging to the acute. Ha adheres to human respiratory epithelium through residues. Influenza viruses are highly susceptible to antigenic shifts and drifts. Antigenic shift: mutations of virus as it gets passed from bird to humans/pigs and goes through rearrangements. People who have heart/lung disease, pregnant, young, elderly, are most prone to death by flu. New subtype of flu virus is introduced in humans. 1918 spanish flu pandemic (most severe) h1n1. Led to mutation/emergence of different strains in different countries. More people died from 1918 flu than the war. Strain of flu spread from war contact. Viral shedding occurs the day before onset of illness symptoms. You are contagious starting the day before you develop symptoms. Not in blood, just in respiratory system. Flu symptoms are more severe and the onset of symptoms are more rapid than those of a seasonal cold. 90% of these were for individuals >65 years of age.
