PHIL 1000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Mental Property, Omnipotence, Good And Evil

30 views3 pages

Document Summary

Aquinas/aristotle: we are compounds of form/matter and soul is the form body is the matter. Materialism: just a body, brain, etc, wholly material. Reductive: such things as thoughts and beliefs (mental properties) but just functions of the brain. Eliminative: no brain states, no thoughts, just physical. Nothing is purely physical, nothing is purely mental. If you could be a soul, why aren"t you a soul right now. Your body + soul is a soul. You can gain or lose parts (loose all physical parts) Materialism: when you are no longer alive you no longer exist. If god exists, and evil exists, then god is not omnipotent, omniscient, or perfectly good. So, either god doesn"t exist or god isn"t one of the qualities outlined above. God doesn"t perform actions that are evil actions. Bad things that happen to people who deserve it. For every evil, there is a person that is responsible. Impossible to teach evil because teaching is always good.
