NURS 2060 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Colorectal Cancer, Oncogene, Colonoscopy
Document Summary
List the three most common causes of cancer death in men and women. Occurs when there is a loss of cell differentiation. Cells continue to grow w/out respect to body"s needs, invading blood vessels, lymphatics, and surrounding structures (metastasis) Incidence: rate in given time frame of cases, frequency of onset of disease. Morbidity: how disease process affects life (changes that it may make) Differentiation: loss of cell regulation: this is considered when grading cancer {1-4 (well differentiated- undifferentiated)} Proto-oncogenes: genes that control normal cell growth (all cells are normal unless mutated: if exposed to a carcinogen they can become mutated = oncogenes. Tumor suppressor genes: inhibits inappropriate cell growth and repairs any dna errors and trigger apoptosis: p53: special tumor suppressor gene that retards (slows) process for dna repair. This gene if mutated will lead to many cancers. Angiogenesis: development of new blood supply to provide nutrients to the tumor.
