Document Summary

Muscles that move the pelvic girdle and lower limb. The most powerful and largest muscles in the body. Several of these muscles cross and act upon two joints the coxal joint (hip) and the knee joint. Muscles that move the coxal joint/thigh *moving thigh and moving hip joint are same thing. Fascia lata deep fascia of thigh, encircles thigh muscles like a supportive stocking and tightly binds them: partitions thigh muscles into compartments. Anterior compartment muscles either extend the knee or flex the thigh. Medial compartment muscles adductors of thigh. Posterior compartment muscles act as both flexors of knee and extensors of thigh: some muscles also abduct thigh. Most muscles that act on the coxal joint/thigh originate on the os coxae. Stabilize the highly movable coxal joint and support the body during standing and walking. Majority of the muscles that move the thigh at the coxal joint originate on the pelvic girdle and insert on the femur.
