INED 4435 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Universal Design, Graphic Organizer
Document Summary
In this presentation we will discuss how students are identified for special education in school settings, specifically through the process of response to intervention. Special education identification is not a uniform process, and can vary drastically depending on the nature of the disability. In this class, we will focus on the identification of specific learning disabilities often referred to as sld or ld. First, sld is the most prevalent disability category and students with sld are primarily educated in the general education classroom. Second, identification for this disability category happens almost exclusively in the school setting. As you can see, the majority of other disabilities involve a medical diagnosis. Sld is primarily based on academic assessment results, which can be subjective and problematic. As you may recall from our study of special education law, using a multi-tiered approach is mandated in idea 2004 to avoid inappropriate identification due to insufficient instruction.
