As early as the late 1800s we have evidence of scholars attempting to understand why some individuals had quote normal intelligence but difficulty learning. Samuel kirk first coined the term learning disabled in 1963, and is often referred to as the father of learning disabilities. Since 1963 legislation was passed to further solidify a learning disability as a federally protected disability category. Today, learning disabilities officially referred to as a specific learning disability is one of the 13 categories protected under idea. The federal definition of a specific learning disability reads: a disorder in one or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding or in using language, spoken, or written.
