Because it matters to organizations: determines how well promises are fulfilled, operationally excellent organizations outperform their rivals in financial and other terms, a broad defitiniton of supply chain operations. 1. 1 important decisions in supply chain operations management: Operations managers answer these questions by defining structural and infrastructural aspects. Structural decisions: affect physical resources (capacity, facilities, technology and supply chain network) define what operations management system can and cannot do well: altering them requires significant investments and lots of time. Infrastructural decisions: affect workforce, production planning and control, process innovation and organization determine what is done, when it s done and who does it: decisions of all areas are interrelated. Operational activities exist in order to produce both tangible goods and intangible services.
