Document Summary

Prevalence of crime (what do we do with the data that is collected?) Note: in order to make comparisons across different population groups, such as the difference in murder between men and women, you must make sure you are using the same group. For example, if you are trying to look at the difference in murder rates for women and men, you must use the number of murders of women divided by the female population. The same with men: crime clearance rate = #arrests/#offenses (what proportion of the number of offenses were cleared by an arrest; how good is the police doing their job) Example 1 of crime rate: city of baton rouge (2007) 71 murders / 228,446 total population = (71/228,446) *100,000 = 31. 08 murders per 100,000 people. Example 2 of crime rate: gardere area (2008) 7 murders/ 2201 population (7/2201) * 100,000 = 318. 04 murders per 100,000 people. Violent crime statistics [ucr, 2008] know these numbers!
